Asked on ANT1’s podcast which figures he believed would take part in a possible internal party contest, Pamborides named Demetriou, Neofytou and himself. He said deciding to run for the nomination involved both a theoretical and a practical process. “Do you believe you can become President of the Republic, that you have the capability to do the job,” he said, adding: “With all due respect and humility, I believe I have what it takes to serve in that role.” He said, however, that he did not have “the access that the other two have,” referring to Neofytou and Demetriou. Asked directly whether the 2028 election was on his mind, Pamborides said: “What would I hide? Let’s clarify. Deciding whether to run for the presidential nomination involves a process. First, there’s a theoretical and a practical process. Do you believe you can become President of the Republic and do the job? Do you have the capability? With all due respect and humility, I consider that I have what’s needed to serve in that role. But I don’t believe I have the access that the other two I described have.” On the parliamentary elections result, Pamborides said the upset came from Nicosia and that DISY needed to take the message that Nicosia had backed the party “for one last time,” so that it could become the voice of households carrying the Cypriot economy on their shoulders. Pamborides also alleged that party officials had called Synagermos voters and told them not to vote for him. “These things do no credit to a democratic party like DISY,” he said. “And if the leadership turns a deaf ear to what happened and doesn’t deal with it, it will find these things in its path again. DISY’s supporters aren’t fools. People called me and told me, you know, so-and-so called me and said this and that. And if you want, I’ll give it to you in writing too. These things are nonsense and they’re criminal offences.” On Nikos Christodoulides, Pamborides said he should acknowledge that he had put himself outside DISY, admit he had made a mistake, ask to return to the party’s structures and expose himself to scrutiny. Pamborides said that if Christodoulides did so, he would support his readmission as a member. Giorgos Pamborides served as Minister of Health of the Republic of Cyprus from July 2015 to February 2018 under President Nicos Anastasiades. He is credited with the creation of the General Health System (GHS/GeSY).
