**Formula E to Start New Season in Mexico if Saudi Opener is Unfeasible**
Formula E is poised to launch its 2026-27 season in Saudi Arabia this December, but contingency plans are in place to shift the opening race to Mexico City in January if regional events necessitate such a change. This announcement was made by Jeff Dodds, the chief executive of the all-electric racing series, during a press briefing on Thursday.
The upcoming season marks the introduction of the Gen4 era for Formula E, with two races scheduled to take place in Jeddah on December 18-19. Following this, the series is slated to hold its next event in Mexico City on January 16. However, the situation in the Middle East remains fluid, prompting the series to remain vigilant regarding developments that could impact the race schedule.
In the context of ongoing geopolitical tensions, both Formula One and the World Rally Championship are also scheduled to conclude their seasons in the Middle East during the months of November and December. The World Rally Championship will hold its final event in Saudi Arabia from November 11-14. Decisions regarding these races are expected to be made in mid-September for logistical considerations.
The backdrop of these racing events is marked by increased instability in the region. The Iran conflict, which escalated in February, has led to heightened tensions, including a naval blockade imposed by Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthis on Saudi Arabia since July. This blockade has included attacks on tankers, which the Houthis claim are a response to what they describe as a Saudi siege on Yemen—an allegation that Riyadh has denied.
Dodds expressed optimism about the Jeddah races proceeding as planned, stating, “I personally have a very high confidence that the race will go ahead in December in Jeddah.” However, he acknowledged the necessity for constant communication with Saudi officials and the importance of monitoring the evolving situation closely. He noted that while the circumstances can change rapidly, a decision must be made in a timely manner to facilitate logistics and transportation of equipment.
In the event that the races in Saudi Arabia cannot proceed as scheduled, Formula E has already earmarked January as a potential start date in Mexico. Dodds clarified that if the Saudi races are canceled, the season would simply commence in Mexico without the need for an alternative race in December.
Additionally, the annual Dakar Rally, which takes place entirely in Saudi Arabia, is still on track to begin on January 1 and run through January 15, serving as the opening round of the FIA’s world rally-raid championship.
As the situation develops, Formula E will continue to assess its options and communicate with stakeholders to ensure the safety and feasibility of its events in the region.
