Mountain Expeditions Cyprus told en.philenews that they have a great love for mountains, nature, and adventure. The group stated that after climbing Mont Blanc last year, as well as several other significant peaks, Elbrus was a challenge they wanted to take on. The group dedicated the expedition to the Cyprus Anti-Cancer Society, noting that the support the organisation provides to individuals across the island is invaluable. They added that cancer has affected people close to their group, stating that the climb “was dedicated to both those currently fighting cancer, and to the memory of those we have lost.” The expedition started on 19 August, when the group arrived in Azau village in Russia. On 20 August, the team started their acclimatisation by climbing 3,461 metres up Mount Cheget. A day later, they climbed to the Pastukhov Rocks on Elbrus, reaching around 4,700 metres. The Cypriots said their summit attempt began at ten in the evening on 22 August and completed their expedition at quarter to ten the next morning, on 23 August, where they raised the Cypriot flag along with the Cyprus Anti-Cancer Society flag. Summiting Elbrus was different to the group’s other expeditions, they noted, telling en.philenews that the altitude required more acclimatisation, and that the team was much more exposed to rapidly changing weather conditions. The group said they took physical and technical precautions by studying the route, maps, navigation, and even previous accidents that took place on the mountain, to ensure they were as prepared as possible for their journey. “After months of preparation and a long summit climb, finally reaching 5,642 metres was an unforgettable moment.” Raising both flags at the summit was a very emotional moment, the team shared. Raising the Anti-Cancer Society flag was especially emotional for the group, they said, as it felt like they were symbolically carrying those fighting cancer, their families, and the memories of those they have lost. “That gave the summit a meaning far beyond the climb itself.” Mountain Expeditions Cyprus shared that their goal is not simply to continue to climb higher mountains, but to inspire more people on the island to discover nature, adventure and the outdoors, challenge themselves and experience what the mountains have to offer.
