The court order relates to the attack that left a 47-year-old Turkish Cypriot man critically injured in Ayia Napa in the early hours of Sunday. The suspect, a Swedish passport holder of Chilean origin, was arrested on Monday afternoon at Larnaca airport, shortly before he was due to fly out of the country. Police said the 47-year-old’s condition remains critical. He is intubated and being treated in the intensive care unit at Nicosia General Hospital. Rumours circulated on social media overnight suggesting the victim had died. Responding to this, Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman said in a Facebook post that he had contacted Düriye Deren Oygar, the Turkish Cypriot co-chair of the bicommunal health technical committee and Undersecretary at the “health ministry.” Oygar had contacted the hospital in the south, he said, and after speaking with two separate officials there, told him the man’s condition remains serious but that he is alive. “I ask our citizens to trust only the announcements made by our authorised authorities,” Erhürman said. CID Famagusta has now arrested all four young men seen on video arguing with the 47-year-old outside a well-known nightclub in Ayia Napa. The video shows the Turkish Cypriot man arguing with the four before being punched, falling to the ground and hitting his head. According to philenews information from police sources, the person who punched the 47-year-old has been identified and is expected to face more serious charges than the other three once the case is filed before the court. Police said the 47-year-old had been at a restaurant with a friend when the two became separated shortly after 5am on Sunday. The fight that followed took place outside the nightclub on Agias Mavris Street. Police were alerted to the incident at 6am and officers who rushed to the scene found the man injured. He was taken to Famagusta General Hospital, where he was found to have a cerebral haemorrhage and a skull fracture. Due to the severity of his condition, he was intubated and transferred to Nicosia General Hospital. CID Famagusta arrested the first three 18-year-olds in the early hours of Monday. All three hold Swedish passports and are of Chilean, Albanian and Iraqi origin. They appeared in court yesterday, which ordered them held for eight days.
