**French Tourist Dies in Death Valley After Car Becomes Stuck in Mud**
A tragic incident occurred in California's Death Valley when a French tourist, 68-year-old Pierre Michel Formosa, was found dead after becoming stranded in extreme heat conditions. The National Park Service reported that Formosa was discovered following a brief search, having succumbed to the harsh environment while attempting to seek help after his vehicle became immobilized.
The incident unfolded last Monday when Formosa and his traveling companion were driving along West Side Road in Death Valley. Their car became stuck in mud, prompting the pair to embark on foot across the salt flats in search of assistance. However, after walking approximately 1.3 miles, Formosa was unable to continue due to the severe heat, which reached a sweltering 46.6°C (116°F).
His companion managed to flag down another driver who then contacted authorities. Park rangers and local police later located Formosa, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. Death Valley National Park Superintendent Mike Reynolds expressed condolences, stating, “This is a heartbreaking reminder of how quickly conditions here can turn dangerous.” He emphasized the risks associated with the park's extreme temperatures, distances, and remoteness, regardless of a visitor's experience level.
The park is currently under an extreme heat warning, with the National Weather Service forecasting that Southern California is experiencing its hottest week of the summer. Death Valley is known for its extreme temperatures, having recorded a global high of 57°C (134°F) in 1913, and it is often referred to as the "hottest place on Earth."
This incident is part of a broader trend, as record heatwaves have impacted various regions across the United States this summer, leading to numerous heat-related fatalities. In June, at least four hikers lost their lives while trekking in the Grand Canyon, highlighting the dangers posed by high temperatures to outdoor enthusiasts.
Authorities have stated that the cause and manner of Formosa's death will be determined by the coroner's office. The National Park Service has expressed gratitude to all those involved in the search efforts and extended their thoughts to Formosa's family and friends during this difficult time.
