**Generative AI Adoption Surges Among French Mid-Sized Companies**
Generative artificial intelligence (AI) is gaining traction among mid-sized companies in France, according to a recent survey conducted by Bpifrance, the state-backed investment bank. The findings, part of Bpifrance's annual barometer of Entreprises de Taille Intermédiaire (ETIs), reveal that 77% of the 534 company leaders surveyed reported that their firms are utilizing generative AI technologies. However, the survey also indicates that a significant portion of these companies have yet to experience clear productivity benefits from their adoption of such technologies.
Despite the high adoption rate, only 17% of the companies employing generative AI reported achieving time savings as a direct result of its use. This suggests that while the technology is being embraced at a rapid pace, many firms are still grappling with how to effectively implement it to realize tangible efficiency gains.
The survey further highlights a correlation between the intensity of generative AI usage and perceived productivity benefits. Among firms that use generative AI regularly, 23% reported productivity gains, compared to just 12% of those who use it occasionally. This indicates that more frequent engagement with generative AI tools may lead to better outcomes in terms of productivity.
Looking ahead, a significant 78% of the surveyed firms expressed optimism about the long-term impact of generative AI on productivity, marking an 11-point increase from the previous year. This growing expectation reflects a broader belief in the potential of generative AI to transform business operations, even if immediate results are still elusive.
The survey also revealed differences in generative AI adoption across various sectors. Companies in the services, industrial, and construction sectors reported higher usage rates compared to those in commerce, transport, and tourism. This sectoral variation may be influenced by the specific operational needs and challenges faced by different industries.
Despite the enthusiasm surrounding generative AI, many firms are currently facing challenges that inhibit growth. A significant 55% of respondents cited current or anticipated demand weakness as a primary factor affecting their business activity. This concern over demand may overshadow the potential benefits of new technologies like generative AI, as companies navigate a complex economic landscape.
The survey also assessed the cash-position outlook for 2026, which saw a decline of 2 points to -12, indicating a more pessimistic view among industrial and construction firms. In contrast, the revenue outlook balance improved by 8 points to +18, although this figure remains below the historical average of +29 recorded between 2011 and 2025.
In summary, while generative AI is rapidly being adopted by French mid-sized companies, the journey toward realizing its full productivity potential appears to be a work in progress. As firms continue to explore and integrate these technologies, the focus will likely shift toward overcoming existing challenges and maximizing the benefits of generative AI in the coming years.
