Three German soldiers have been hospitalized after two military trucks traveling in a convoy collided with each other on a highway in southwestern Poland, the Polish Gendarmerie has said.

The collision on the A4 highway near Kostomloty, 27 km from Wroclaw, left three German soldiers injured on Wednesday, military police spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Dariusz Rozkosz said. The drivers were sober, he added.

The Polish authorities confirmed that the German military convoy was transiting through the country under a permit that does not require a Polish military escort. Its final destination was not disclosed.

The crash caused major a traffic disruption, with lines stretching up to 10 km. Firefighters said the military vehicles were transporting around 150 liters of diesel fuel, although the container remained intact. Traffic restrictions were lifted later that day.

This comes as Germany expands its military activities in Eastern Europe as part of NATO’s buildup along the eastern flank.

Since June, German military engineers have been deployed to Poland to help construct the ‘Eastern Shield’, a network of fortifications along the border with the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad and Belarus.

Berlin is also establishing a permanent military presence in neighboring Lithuania, where a German armored brigade is expected to become fully operational by the end of 2027. The deployment is expected to involve around 4,800 soldiers, making it a major part of Germany’s expanding military footprint along NATO’s eastern flank.

Senior German and Dutch military commanders, including German Army chief Lieutenant General Christian Freuding, also toured Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania from October 26 to 30 to inspect potential troop deployment sites under NATO’s defense plans. Since July, a joint German-Dutch corps has been responsible for potential NATO land operations in Estonia and Latvia.

The German Army has also been rehearsing the movement of reinforcements to the Baltic states. In October, military logistics units conducted their first deployment exercise in Estonia, testing the transportation of troops and heavy equipment by land, sea, and air.

Germany has intensified its military presence to the east, stationing troops close to Russia’s borders. It has also pivoted its ailing economy to defense production, joining the EU in prioritizing military spending over social services.

Russia has warned that NATO’s growing military presence near the borders poses a threat to national security and risks escalating tensions. The EU claims that its military buildup is necessary to counter the growing ‘Russian threat’. Moscow has dismissed the claims as nonsense, accusing European governments of using the supposed threat to justify increased military spending and weapons supplies to Ukraine.
