Patients are also struggling to reach their doctors, many of whom are away on summer holiday, while several pharmacies are closed ahead of the 15 August holiday, making it difficult to reach pharmacists as well. For some of the recalled products, equivalent medicines are already listed in GESY’s pharmaceutical catalogue, meaning substitutions can be made. According to philenews, the Health Insurance Organisation (HIO) is working to find a technical way for GESY pharmacists to substitute these directly, without requiring an immediate change to prescriptions. The bigger problem concerns medicines for which no alternatives exist. For these, doctors will be required to change patients’ treatment, at least until the HIO completes a process — already under way — to secure stock from other sources. For one such product, according to the same information, a stock of the equivalent medicine has already been secured. Both doctors and the HIO noted that the recalls have come at a time when most providers — doctors, pharmacists and drug distribution companies — are on holiday, making the issue harder to manage. Regarding doctors, philenews understands the HIO is likely to issue an announcement tomorrow with detailed instructions for each product on the recall list. Hospitals have already been briefed on how to handle the medicines recalled by the manufacturer. The recall was made voluntarily by the manufacturer, and, as stressed in yesterday’s announcements, there is no safety concern for patients currently taking the products. However, once medicines are recalled, they must be replaced so that patients are not left without pharmaceutical coverage.
