**Govt Remains Committed to UN Framework for Cyprus Solution**
The Cypriot government has reiterated its commitment to resolving the long-standing Cyprus issue through negotiations grounded in the United Nations framework and European Union law. This declaration was made by Interior Minister Constantinos Ioannou during a commemorative event on Thursday night, which marked the anniversaries of the 1974 coup and the subsequent Turkish invasion.
Speaking on behalf of President Nikos Christodoulides, Ioannou emphasized that finding a solution to the Cyprus problem is the government's top priority. He expressed a strong sense of responsibility towards the Cypriot people and a deep awareness of the historical significance of the ongoing efforts. "We are working consistently to create the conditions for the resumption of negotiations for a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem," Ioannou stated, underscoring the importance of adhering to the agreed UN framework and the principles of EU law.
The minister noted that recent diplomatic initiatives have gained traction, driven by the government’s clear political will and persistent diplomatic engagement. He highlighted that these efforts have not gone unnoticed by the international community, which has recognized Cyprus' enhanced role as a reliable partner within the EU and the broader region.
In his remarks, Ioannou reaffirmed the Greek Cypriot side's support for the initiatives led by the UN Secretary-General. He indicated that the government is actively working to foster the necessary conditions for the resumption of dialogue. "Despite the difficulties and the well-known challenges, we remain committed to achieving a functional and viable solution that reunites our homeland and our people and guarantees the peaceful coexistence of all the lawful residents of Cyprus," he stated.
The Interior Minister also addressed the government's broader foreign policy objectives, which include strengthening strategic partnerships and enhancing Cyprus' international standing. He pointed out that active participation in the EU and ongoing efforts to bolster the Republic’s national strength are integral to improving Cyprus' position on the global stage.
"Our goal remains one and unchanged: the evolution of the Republic of Cyprus into a modern, reunified European state, a member of the European Union and the United Nations, where all its lawful residents can live in conditions of peace, security, democracy, and prosperity," Ioannou concluded.
