**Greece Extends Motor Fuel Discounts Amid Rising Prices**
In response to the escalating fuel costs affecting households and businesses, Greece has announced an extension of motor fuel discounts through mid-October. The decision comes as part of a broader strategy to alleviate financial pressures stemming from surging fuel prices, which have been exacerbated by ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.
Helleniq Energy, Greece's largest oil refiner, confirmed that it will continue to provide discounts of €0.0795 per litre on unleaded gasoline and €0.0405 per litre on diesel fuel. These discounts, which have been in effect since July 14, will remain available until October 14, according to a statement from the company.
The discounts are part of a coordinated effort involving Greece's two largest oil refiners and the state to mitigate the impact of rising fuel prices on consumers. The government has indicated that the situation is fluid and that interventions will be reassessed every 15 days to respond to changing market conditions.
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis addressed the issue during a cabinet meeting, acknowledging the challenges posed by the current economic climate. "It is a cascading storm that is knocking on every country’s door, essentially testing the limits of their budgets," he stated. His remarks highlight the widespread financial strain that rising fuel costs are placing on various sectors, from everyday consumers to industrial operations.
In addition to the existing discounts, the Greek government announced an increase in the state discount on diesel fuel by €0.05, bringing the total discount at service stations to €0.20 per litre for the next two weeks. This move is intended to further cushion the impact of rising fuel prices on consumers.
Looking ahead, the government plans to introduce additional support for heating oil in the weeks leading up to October 15, a critical period when consumers typically begin purchasing fuel for the winter months. Mitsotakis emphasized the government's goal to maintain a market price for heating oil below €1.75 per litre, aiming to ensure affordability for households during the colder months.
As Greece navigates these economic challenges, the government's proactive measures reflect a commitment to support its citizens and businesses during a time of uncertainty. The ongoing situation will continue to be monitored closely, with adjustments made as necessary to address the evolving landscape of fuel prices and their broader economic implications.
