**Greek Cypriot Woman Arrested in Northern Cyprus for Shoplifting**
A Greek Cypriot woman was brought before a court in northern Nicosia on Monday, facing charges of shoplifting from the Erulku hypermarket located in the village of Neo Chorio. The incident reportedly took place shortly after midday on Tuesday of the previous week, according to testimony provided by Turkish Cypriot police officer Mahmut Kolcu.
The woman is accused of stealing a variety of cosmetic products, including two boxes of under-eye products, three canisters of hair concealer, and three bottles of nail polish. In addition to these items, she allegedly took two bottles of orange juice. The total value of the stolen cosmetics was reported to be 2,088.93 Turkish Lira (approximately €37.19), while the orange juice was valued at 85.70 Turkish Lira (around €1.53).
The Turkish Cypriot police were notified of the theft on Thursday following a review of the hypermarket's CCTV footage, which captured the woman taking the items and subsequently entering her vehicle. This evidence led to her arrest on Sunday as she attempted to cross into the northern part of Cyprus through the Dherynia crossing point.
During the court proceedings, Officer Kolcu stated that after being shown the CCTV footage, the woman confessed to the crime, admitting that she had already transported the stolen products to the Republic of Cyprus. He requested that she be remanded in custody due to the nature of the offense.
In her defense, the woman expressed concern for her young daughter, stating that her husband is currently in another country and that a prolonged detention would leave the child without parental care. She emphasized that this situation would have a detrimental effect on her daughter.
Judge Zehra Yalkut Bilgec presided over the case and ultimately decided to remand the woman in custody at the central prison in the north for a period not exceeding seven days. The case highlights ongoing issues related to cross-border crime and the complexities of legal jurisdiction in the divided island of Cyprus.
