Larnaca, Cyprus – On Thursday, residents of Kiti and Pervolia reported sightings of low-flying military aircraft, which were later identified as Greek F-16 fighter jets and a French C-130 military transport aircraft. The flights were part of routine operational activities, according to Cyprus’ Defence Minister Vasilis Palmas.
The aircraft were operating from the Andreas Papandreou air base in Paphos, as outlined by existing bilateral agreements between Greece and Cyprus. Minister Palmas emphasized that these flights are scheduled and are conducted along a designated route that includes Paphos, Troodos, and Larnaca.
In response to the concerns raised by local residents regarding the low altitude of the aircraft, Palmas reassured the public that such military operations are standard practice and are conducted in accordance with established protocols. The presence of the French C-130, which had departed from Larnaca airport, was also noted as part of these routine activities.
The Defence Minister addressed inquiries regarding airspace violations, particularly referencing the frequent incursions by Turkish F-16 fighter jets into Cyprus’ airspace. Palmas stated that when such violations occur, the Republic of Cyprus takes action by lodging formal diplomatic protests through the appropriate state authorities.
The flights on Thursday have sparked discussions among the local community, highlighting the ongoing military cooperation between Greece and Cyprus, as well as the broader regional security dynamics involving Turkey.
