**Greek Frigate Nikiforos Fokas Replaces Elli in Cyprus**
The Hellenic Navy's frigate Nikiforos Fokas has officially taken over from the frigate Elli, which recently completed an extensive deployment of nearly 100 days as part of Greece's ongoing commitment to Cyprus' defense. This changeover was confirmed by Christos Pieris, spokesman for the Cyprus Defence Ministry, in a statement to the Cyprus Mail.
The deployment of Nikiforos Fokas marks a continuation of Greece's naval presence in the region, which began in March following a drone strike on the British Base of Akrotiri. The frigate Elli had been stationed in Cypriot waters for over three months, succeeding earlier deployments by the frigates Kimon and Psara.
Nikiforos Fokas, designated F-466, was commissioned into the Hellenic Navy in 2003 after serving with the Royal Netherlands Navy. The vessel is named after the Byzantine emperor and military commander Nikephoros II Phokas, reflecting a historical connection to Greek naval heritage.
Like its predecessors, Nikiforos Fokas is equipped with Greece's Kentavros counter-drone system, which is designed to enhance the frigate's capabilities in modern naval warfare, particularly in countering aerial threats. This technology is part of Greece's broader strategy to bolster its defense measures in the Eastern Mediterranean, a region that has seen increased military activity and geopolitical tensions.
Greek Defence Minister Nikos Dendias has previously indicated that Greek military assets, including naval forces, will remain deployed in the area as long as necessary to ensure regional stability and security. In parallel, Cyprus Defence Minister Vasilis Palmas has emphasized that the current deployment is temporary and will be subject to ongoing assessment based on the evolving situation in the region.
The presence of Greek naval forces around Cyprus is part of a strategic partnership aimed at enhancing defense cooperation between Greece and Cyprus, especially in light of recent regional developments. This collaboration underscores the importance both nations place on maintaining security and stability in the Eastern Mediterranean.
As the Nikiforos Fokas begins its mission, it will continue to contribute to the ongoing efforts to safeguard Cyprus' territorial integrity and support the island's defense capabilities. The deployment reflects a commitment to regional security and the readiness of Greek forces to respond to potential threats in the area.
