UNCTAD Secretary-General Rebeca Grynspan has again received most votes of support in the fourth informal poll in the UN Security Council on candidates for the post of the organization’s secretary·general, Reuters quoted sources as saying. According to them, ten members of the UN Security Council supported Grynspan, three voted against, and two abstained. Earlier, a TASS source at the UN said that after a preliminary vote on September 18 nine members of the Security Council voted in favor of Grynspan, five voted against, and one abstained. Guyana's UN ambassador Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett and IAEA head Rafael Grossi each received eight votes on Tuesday, but Rodriguez·Birkett received six votes against, while Grossi received seven, Reuters reports. Antonio Guterres, who has been leading the UN since 2017, will step down on December 31. The members of the Security Council will select a candidate to be recommended for the post of head of the global organization. After that, the General Assembly will hold a vote, in which a new UN secretary·general will be officially elected. Besides Grynspan, Rodriguez·Birkett, and Grossi, former Senegalese President Macky Sall, former Ecuadorian Foreign Minister and former Ecuadorian Defense Minister Maria Fernanda Espinosa Garces, former Ecuadorian ambassador to the United States and France Ivonne Baki, and former Uganda’s permanent representative to the UN Olara Otunnu, are all vying for the position of head of the global organization.
