**Hadjiandreou Sworn In as Aglandjia Deputy Mayor Following Election Victory**
Aglandjia, Cyprus – Andri Hadjiandreou was officially sworn in as the new deputy mayor of Aglandjia on Monday, following her electoral victory in a byelection held the previous day. The swearing-in ceremony took place at the Nicosia district government offices, marking a significant moment in local governance for the community.
Hadjiandreou secured her position by winning 55.49 percent of the votes, amounting to 2,309 votes out of a total of 4,209 ballots cast. Her opponent, Prokopis Prokopiou, received the remaining votes in a contest characterized by a notably low voter turnout, with an abstention rate of 72.27 percent.
In her inaugural speech, Hadjiandreou expressed gratitude to the individuals and political parties that supported her campaign, including the Progressive Party of Working People (Akel), the Movement for Social Democracy (Edek), the Ecologists Movement, and the Greens. She emphasized her commitment to collaborating with these groups to fulfill the promises made during her campaign.
“I hope to continue working together with the parties and organizations who supported me to fulfill all the promises we’ve made,” Hadjiandreou stated, signaling her intention to foster a cooperative approach to governance.
Hadjiandreou also took a moment to acknowledge the efforts of election commissioner Andreas Hadjipakkos, who oversaw the electoral process. She praised the smooth execution of the election, stating, “We visited all the polling stations. Everything ran smoothly from the very first minute to the very last.”
In his remarks, Hadjipakkos offered Hadjiandreou advice on local governance, highlighting the high expectations that citizens have of their local representatives. He noted that local government serves as the institution closest to the people, underscoring the importance of responsiveness and accountability in her new role.
The byelection was necessitated by the previous deputy mayor, Andreas Constantinou, being elected to the House of Representatives as a Member of Parliament (MP). The election results also included 29 invalid ballots and 20 blank ballots, reflecting the complexities often present in electoral processes.
