In a concerning development for global climate patterns, average temperatures worldwide soared to an unprecedented 16.96°C in August 2026, marking the hottest month recorded since 1940, according to the EU’s Copernicus Climate Change Service. This figure represents a staggering 1.65°C increase compared to the 1850-1900 average, a benchmark period often cited for pre-industrial temperature levels.
The record heat was particularly felt in Western Europe, where countries such as France, the United Kingdom, and Belgium experienced their hottest summers on record. France, in particular, faced extreme conditions with 53 days of heatwaves and nearly 40% less rainfall than usual, making it the second-driest summer since 1959. The extreme weather conditions have been linked to a series of adverse effects, including a significant rise in mortality rates. During a heatwave from June 17 to July 2, France saw an estimated 5,764 excess deaths, which is 36% above the expected level for that period. An additional 1,243 excess deaths were reported during subsequent heatwaves from July 3 to July 22.
The agricultural sector has not been spared from the impacts of the extreme heat. Germany reported a 7.3% decline in its grain harvest year-on-year, attributing the drop to the combination of heat and drought. The situation has prompted the French government to announce over €1 billion ($1.16 billion) in emergency aid to support farmers facing financial hardships due to the adverse weather conditions.
Wildfires have also ravaged parts of Europe, fueled by dry vegetation and soaring temperatures. By early September, more than 647,000 hectares had burned across the EU, nearly double the 20-year average for that time of year, according to data from the European Commission’s Joint Research Center.
The oceans outside polar regions are also experiencing unprecedented warmth, reaching joint-highest monthly sea-surface temperatures, which has been a trend for three consecutive months. Climate scientists attribute this long-term warming primarily to human-induced greenhouse gas emissions, while short-term phenomena such as El Niño can exacerbate temperature spikes.
Samantha Burgess from the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, which oversees the Copernicus Climate Change Service, stated, “Humans haven’t seen temperatures as hot as today for, arguably, at least the last 100,000 years.” This statement underscores the severity of the current climate crisis, as scientists utilize various methods, including ice cores and tree rings, to reconstruct historical temperature data.
UN climate chief Simon Stiell highlighted the urgent need to address the root causes of climate change, labeling the recent temperature records as “the spiraling price of humanity’s fossil fuel addiction.” He cautioned that extreme heat events are likely to persist as long as fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and gas continue to be burned. Currently, long-term global warming is estimated to be around 1.4°C above pre-industrial levels.
