**Holguin Cancels New York Trip Due to Health Issues**
Maria Angela Holguin, the personal envoy for Cyprus appointed by UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, has canceled her upcoming visits to New York and Cyprus due to health concerns. The announcement was made by UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric on Tuesday.
Holguin was scheduled to travel to New York to meet with Guterres before continuing on to Cyprus for further diplomatic engagements. Dujarric confirmed the cancellation, stating, “I can officially confirm that Holguin had to cancel her visit both to New York, where she was due to meet with the Secretary General, and to Cyprus.”
In light of her health issues, Holguin will instead provide Guterres with updates on her work via telephone. Dujarric emphasized that despite the cancellations, Holguin remains in close communication with the leaders and representatives from both sides of the Cyprus conflict.
This was not the first time Holguin's travel plans had been disrupted due to health reasons. Her visit to Cyprus had already been postponed previously. She was expected to meet with President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman during her upcoming trip, which was originally set for Thursday.
The discussions were anticipated to focus on the ongoing Cyprus issue, with Holguin expected to remain on the island until a scheduled meeting between the two leaders on September 16. President Christodoulides expressed optimism about the potential for progress, indicating that a document outlining existing convergences on the Cyprus problem could be ready prior to Holguin's return. He noted that this document could serve as a constructive basis for resuming talks, with the ultimate goal of preserving the negotiating framework and potentially convening a broader conference.
As the situation develops, both the UN and local leaders will be closely monitoring the circumstances surrounding Holguin's health and the implications for ongoing diplomatic efforts in Cyprus.
