**Holguin Praises Technical Committees as ‘Best Example’ of Cooperation in Cyprus**
Nicosia, Cyprus – Maria Angela Holguin, the UN secretary-general’s personal envoy for Cyprus, commended the island's bicommunal technical committees for their pivotal role in fostering cooperation and mutual understanding between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots. Speaking at a public event organized by UNDP Cyprus at the Home for Cooperation in Nicosia on Wednesday, Holguin referred to these committees as “the best example in Cyprus” of how dialogue can yield meaningful results.
Holguin's visit to Cyprus is part of ongoing efforts to lay the groundwork for a potential resumption of negotiations concerning the long-standing Cyprus issue. During her address, she emphasized the importance of cooperation and dialogue, stating, “I am convinced that cooperation and dialogue with a common purpose are essential in Cyprus.” She highlighted that significant progress can be achieved through relationships built over time, underscoring the importance of continuous contact between the two communities.
The envoy praised the contributions of committee members, noting that much of their work occurs outside the public eye, yet remains crucial in promoting dialogue and mutual understanding. Holguin pointed out that the technical committees have been instrumental in demonstrating that coexistence based on respect, tolerance, and collaboration is achievable.
Since their establishment in 2008, the technical committees have made notable contributions across various sectors, including cultural heritage preservation, public health cooperation, environmental initiatives, and practical projects that enhance daily life for residents across the island. Holguin remarked, “These achievements may not always make headlines, but they are deeply significant.”
In her remarks, Holguin expressed gratitude to committee members for their voluntary service and dedication, encouraging them to continue their work in building communication bridges and promoting a shared vision for the future of Cyprus. “Your dedication and perseverance are a source of inspiration and a reminder that solutions can be found,” she stated.
Menelaos Menelaou, the Greek Cypriot negotiator, echoed Holguin’s sentiments, asserting that the technical committees exemplify the potential for collaboration when both communities adopt a Cyprus-wide perspective. He described the committees as embodying the vision of a peaceful and reunited Cyprus, serving as a tangible demonstration of what can be accomplished through cooperation.
Mehmet Dana, the special representative of the Turkish Cypriot leader, also praised the technical committees, labeling them as one of the most successful cooperation mechanisms established on the island in the past two decades. He highlighted their contributions to various areas, including the opening of crossing points, cultural heritage protection, public health, environmental issues, youth affairs, and gender equality, noting that these efforts have delivered substantial benefits for both communities.
A common theme among the speakers was the recognition that, despite political challenges and periodic difficulties, the technical committees remain one of the most effective mechanisms for cooperation in Cyprus. They are instrumental in building trust and developing practical solutions that benefit all residents of the island.
