The House of Representatives in Cyprus took significant steps on Thursday night by officially approving the composition of its selection committee, alongside the appointment of new parliamentary secretaries and an administrative clerk. The plenary session, which lasted a brief 13 minutes, was chaired by Diko MP Zacharias Koulias due to the absence of House President Annita Demetriou, who is currently serving as acting head of state while President Nikos Christodoulides is on an official trip abroad.
During this session, Disy MP Nikoleta Constantinou and Akel's Anastasia Hasikou were appointed as House secretaries, while Elam MP Marios Pelekanos was designated as the dean. The House also confirmed parliamentary representatives for the four largest parties: Demetris Demetriou for Disy, Giorgos Loukaides for Akel, Sotiris Ioannou for Elam, and Panikos Leonidou for Diko.
The primary focus of the session was the establishment of the selection committee, which is tasked with determining the composition and leadership of parliamentary committees for the new legislative period. The committee is made up of three MPs from Disy—Demetris Demetriou, Giorgos Karoulas, and Savia Orphanides—along with three MPs from Akel: Stefanos Stefanou, Giorgos Loukaides, and Aristos Damianou. Alma party leader Odysseas Michaelides raised objections, arguing that his party deserved representation on the committee despite not meeting the traditional parliamentary threshold of seven MPs. He contended that neither the Constitution nor parliamentary rules explicitly exclude smaller parties from participation. Michaelides proposed his own candidacy for the committee but failed to garner sufficient support.
During the discussions, Akel's Giorgos Loukaides clarified that his party would not support the inclusion of an Elam representative on the committee. In response, Demetris Demetriou acknowledged Michaelides' right to submit a candidacy but noted that the matter had not been discussed in prior consultations among party leaders.
Following the plenary session, the newly formed selection committee convened for its first meeting to initiate discussions regarding the allocation of committee chairmanships. This process is crucial as it will determine which parties will control individual committees and whether the current structure of 16 committees will remain intact or undergo restructuring. Elam has proposed the reduction of the number of committees, and various scenarios are under consideration.
