Yemen's Houthi forces announced on Wednesday that they have successfully shot down a Saudi F-15 fighter jet, releasing a video purportedly showing the burning wreckage of the aircraft. If confirmed, this incident would mark the first verified instance of a Saudi jet being downed by Houthi air defenses.
In a video statement, Houthi spokesman Yahya Saree indicated that the jet was targeted over Yemen’s Marib Governorate using “a locally manufactured surface-to-air missile.” He further claimed that Houthi fighters were able to repel two waves of Saudi F-15s and Eurofighter Typhoon jets that were dispatched to locate the wreckage.
The timing of the incident has not been disclosed, and the Saudi military has yet to confirm the loss of the aircraft. The video released by the Houthis shows a missile crew locking onto the jet before launching an attack. Footage captures the missile striking the aircraft, which subsequently plummets to the ground engulfed in flames. It remains unclear whether the pilot was able to eject before the crash.
Additional footage from the crash site depicts Houthi fighters lifting the tail section of the aircraft, which displayed the Saudi flag. The militants were seen posing in front of the wreckage, chanting slogans such as “Death to America” and “Death to Israel.”
Historically, the Houthis, also known as the Ansar Allah movement, have claimed to have downed three Saudi fighter jets previously—one in 2017 and two in 2018. They also asserted that they had damaged a Saudi jet during the same year. However, Riyadh has consistently denied losing any aircraft to Houthi fire, and the lack of clear video evidence has made it difficult to substantiate these earlier claims.
Since 2015, Saudi Arabia has been engaged in military operations against the Houthis, although a ceasefire was established in 2022. The conflict reignited in July when the Saudi-backed government in Aden conducted airstrikes on Houthi-controlled areas in Sana’a. In retaliation, the Houthis targeted Saudi installations, leading to a resurgence of large-scale airstrikes by Saudi forces on Yemen.
The recent Houthi offensive has raised concerns regarding Saudi Arabia’s vital oil exports. The Kingdom has recently redirected its oil shipments from the Persian Gulf to the Red Sea, as the Strait of Hormuz remains a point of tension due to ongoing US-Iran conflicts. With the Houthis now exerting control over the western coast, Saudi Arabia faces threats to its exports from both directions.
On the same day as the jet shootdown claim, Saree reported that Houthi forces also launched attacks on a Saudi airbase in Khamis Mushait and targeted Aramco oil facilities in Yanbu using drones and ballistic missiles.
