Under ideal conditions and away from artificial light, observers in Cyprus may see dozens of meteors streaking across the sky each hour. The shower is expected to peak overnight from 12 to 13 August, although meteors can be seen throughout the middle of the month. Meteors may become visible from around 10pm, but the best viewing generally comes after midnight and continues until the sky begins to brighten before dawn. Those who do not want to stay out all night should aim for at least midnight to 2am. The best dark-sky locations Troodos Mountains: The higher elevation offers darker skies, cooler air and fewer obstructions. Areas near Troodos Square, Mount Olympus or the Troodos Observatory near Agridia provide some of the island’s best viewing conditions. Bring a light jacket, as temperatures can fall quickly after dark. Xyliatos Dam: About a 45-minute drive from Nicosia, the reservoir is far from major sources of artificial light. Its quiet surroundings and open horizon make it a popular option for stargazing. Akamas and Cape Greco: Both coastal nature reserves offer wide views of the night sky and areas with limited street lighting. Visitors can settle near the coast and watch meteors appear above the sea. Tips for stargazing Leave the telescope at home: Meteors move quickly and can appear anywhere across the sky, making them easier to see with the naked eye. Put away your phone: It can take around 20 minutes for your eyes to adjust to the darkness. Looking at a bright screen will interfere with your night vision. Bring a reclining chair: A beach chair or blanket will allow you to look upwards comfortably without straining your neck. Watch a film under the stars For those looking for a relaxed evening in town before turning their attention to the night sky, outdoor cinemas and summer screenings are available across the island.
