According to reports from the local police and the animal welfare organization Humane World for Animals, nine individuals have been arrested in connection with the alleged theft ring. The police described the group as specializing in the collection and trafficking of cats, with operations spanning the last three years.
During the raids conducted last week, law enforcement officials recovered more than 400 live cats, alongside approximately 80 deceased animals that were preserved on ice. Additionally, 21 cats were seized from a separate facility, highlighting the scale of the operation.
The consumption of dog and cat meat is legal in Vietnam; however, vendors are required to have permits that verify the origin of the animals. Police began their investigation on June 11 after noticing a rise in pet thefts in Ho Chi Minh City. The suspects reportedly confessed to trapping and collecting cats, which they then transported to holding facilities before selling them to traders. Transactions were said to occur every two to three days.
Humane World for Animals has confirmed that around 40 of the rescued cats have been successfully reunited with their owners. The organization commended local authorities for their swift action in saving the animals, although it noted that some cats had succumbed to the harsh conditions they endured during captivity.
As part of their ongoing support, Humane World for Animals is providing food and supplies for the animals that remain in police custody as evidence while the investigation continues. The organization has also called on residents who suspect their pets may have been stolen to come forward, assisting in the identification of the recovered animals.
The issue of pet theft for meat consumption is a pressing concern in Vietnam, with estimates suggesting that around five million dogs and one million cats are captured, stolen, trafficked, and slaughtered annually for their meat. The methods used in these thefts are often cruel, with pets being lured away using poisoned bait, tasers, and traps.
