**Hurricane Lala Weakens to Tropical Storm, Flooding Continues in Hawaii**
Hurricane Lala has transitioned from a Category 1 hurricane to a tropical storm as it passed south of Hawaii, yet the islands are still grappling with significant flooding and hazardous weather conditions. The storm, which has been closely monitored by meteorologists, has led to warnings of hurricane-force gusts and flash flooding across the region.
On Saturday, the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) issued a hurricane warning for the Big Island, marking a rare event as it has not experienced a direct hurricane landfall in 155 years. Although Lala has weakened, its effects have continued to be felt, particularly in areas such as Maui, Oahu, and Kauai, where tropical storm winds have been reported.
As the storm drifted past the Hawaiian coast, it brought with it heavy rain and strong winds. Reports indicate that pounding waves have been crashing against the shores of the Big Island, while wild squalls have caused tall palm trees to bend and fierce rain has swollen local rivers. The NHC has projected that higher windward slopes could receive up to one meter (three feet) of rain, raising concerns about life-threatening mudslides and rapidly rising floodwaters. Some areas of the Big Island may see rainfall totals reaching up to 90 cm (35 inches).
The impact of Lala has been significant, with more than 60,000 households losing power across the islands. In response to the storm, three hospitals have switched to generator power to maintain operations. Hawaii's Governor Josh Green reported on Saturday evening that at least one fatality has been linked to the storm, with a car accident occurring in the South Point area of the Big Island. Additionally, reports indicate that 19 roofs have been lost due to the severe weather conditions.
Residents have expressed their concerns about the storm's intensity. Christine Matsuda, a Waimea resident, described the conditions, stating that “big gusts every few minutes rattle the whole house.” The ongoing tropical storm warnings remain in effect for several islands, including Maui, Molokai, Lanai, Kahoolawe, Oahu, Kauai, and Niihau.
As the storm continues to affect the Hawaiian coast, fears are mounting regarding the potential for catastrophic wildfires, particularly in areas already impacted by heavy rains and winds.
