**Iceland to Join Eurosystem Instant Payment System by 2028**
In a significant development for Iceland's financial landscape, the European Central Bank (ECB) and the central bank of Iceland, Sedlabanki Islands, have formalized an agreement for Iceland to join the Eurosystem’s TARGET Instant Payment Settlement (TIPS) system. This agreement was signed on Wednesday and marks a pivotal step towards modernizing payment processes in Iceland.
Beginning in 2028, the agreement will enable the settlement of payments in Icelandic krona using central bank money. This integration will make the Icelandic krona the fifth currency to be utilized for retail payment settlements within the Eurosystem’s TARGET Services, which currently includes the euro, Swedish krona, Danish krone, and will also welcome the Norwegian krone in the same year.
ECB President Christine Lagarde expressed her enthusiasm regarding this collaboration, stating, “We are delighted that more and more European countries, including from outside the European Union, are joining the Eurosystem’s TARGET Services.” Lagarde emphasized that this move reinforces the integration of Europe’s financial infrastructures, enhances strategic autonomy, and strengthens economic relations among member states.
Asgeir Jonsson, the Governor of Sedlabanki Islands, highlighted the importance of this agreement for Iceland. “This is an important step in modernising Iceland’s payments landscape and ensuring it is fit for the future,” he remarked. Jonsson pointed out that joining TIPS will not only bolster the security and efficiency of instant payments in Iceland but also enhance the resilience of the country’s payment infrastructure.
The integration into the TIPS system will align Iceland’s payment processes with the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA) practices, which aim to simplify cross-border euro transactions. This alignment is expected to provide Iceland with the benefits of scale and expertise offered by the Eurosystem’s TARGET Services.
TARGET Services, developed and operated by the Eurosystem, utilize central bank money to facilitate secure and efficient transfers between banks, businesses, and individuals. TIPS specifically allows banks and payment service providers to offer real-time fund transfers to customers, available 24/7, thus enhancing the overall payment experience.
As the financial landscape continues to evolve, Iceland's participation in the Eurosystem's instant payment system is poised to bring significant advantages to both consumers and businesses, ensuring that the nation remains competitive and well-integrated within the European financial framework.
