**Title: Tragic Incident Near Gaza Border Claims Life of Three-Year-Old Boy**
A heartbreaking incident near the Gaza border has left a three-year-old boy dead and his father severely injured. Baha Abu Al-Ajeen, a Palestinian farmer, recounted the traumatic events from his hospital bed in Deir Al-Balah, Central Gaza, after an encounter with Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) troops.
According to Abu Al-Ajeen, he was driving along a rural road close to the ‘yellow line’—a demarcation line between Gaza and Israel—when Israeli soldiers ordered him to stop. His young son was in his arms at the time, and as the situation escalated, Abu Al-Ajeen reported that his son began to cry. He described the moment of the shooting, stating, “From the first bullet, I stopped completely to avoid getting killed. The first bullet hit the road while the second hit the child directly while he was in my arms… A soldier shot the child right in the head.” Abu Al-Ajeen himself was also struck, suffering a severe leg injury.
Following the shooting, Abu Al-Ajeen claimed that the soldiers did not call for medical assistance and confiscated his phone, preventing him from seeking help. He stated that he was held for several hours in a military vehicle with his injured son before the child succumbed to his injuries. “Right after my son died in my arms, they took him away from me,” he said, explaining that he was later dropped off at an undisclosed location and eventually transported to Al-Aqsa Hospital.
In response to the incident, the IDF stated that their soldiers had initiated standard procedures for suspect apprehension, which included warning fire. They acknowledged that one Gazan was killed and another injured as a result of the gunfire.
The tragic death of Abu Al-Ajeen's son comes amid ongoing violence in the region, with a recent report from the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory alleging that Israeli forces have deliberately targeted Palestinian children. The report accused Israel of committing acts that could be classified as genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity. It noted that approximately 30% of those killed in Gaza since the outbreak of hostilities in October 2023 have been children.
Additionally, the commission highlighted the detrimental impact of the conflict on maternal and neonatal care, leading to increased rates of miscarriages, birth defects, and starvation-related deaths among minors due to an ongoing aid blockade. Israel has dismissed the findings of the commission as a “defamatory advocacy report” and a “libelous sham.”
UNICEF has reported that over 50,000 Palestinian children have been killed or wounded since the onset of the current conflict, which began following a Hamas-led attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023. This attack resulted in the deaths of approximately 1,200 people and the abduction of more than 250 hostages. In retaliation, Israel has conducted extensive air and ground operations in Gaza, with local health authorities reporting over 73,000 fatalities in the enclave as a result of the ongoing military campaign.
As the situation continues to evolve, the international community remains concerned about the impact of the conflict on civilians, particularly vulnerable populations such as children. The tragic case of Baha Abu Al-Ajeen and his son serves as a stark reminder of the human cost of the ongoing violence in the region.
