**India Achieves 24/7 Monitoring Capability with Launch of EOS-05 Satellite**
India has successfully launched its first imaging satellite capable of operating from geosynchronous orbit, marking a significant advancement in the country's satellite technology. The Earth Observation Satellite-05 (EOS-05) was launched aboard the Indian Space Research Organization’s (ISRO) GSLV-F17 rocket from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota at 2:55 AM on Friday. Approximately 18 minutes post-launch, the satellite was successfully placed into a transfer orbit.
ISRO Chairman V. Narayanan emphasized the importance of EOS-05, stating that it is designed for "persistent monitoring of the Indian region." Unlike existing Earth-imaging satellites that operate in lower orbits and require time to revisit locations for fresh imagery, EOS-05 can continuously observe the same broad area. This capability allows for near-real-time imaging, which is vital for various applications, including disaster monitoring, agricultural assessments, and military surveillance.
The satellite's innovative steerable camera enables it to focus on specific locations within its designated area, providing flexibility in monitoring. "You can even take spot photographs," Narayanan explained, highlighting the satellite's advanced imaging capabilities.
The operational advantages of EOS-05 are particularly significant in terms of security and military applications. Retired Indian Army Lieutenant General Arun Saini noted that the satellite provides a "24/7 eye in the sky," allowing for immediate observation without the wait time typically associated with lower-orbit satellites. This continuous monitoring is expected to enhance India's situational awareness along its borders with Pakistan and China, both of which have been sources of military tension in recent years.
The satellite's capabilities extend beyond military use; it is also poised to play a crucial role in monitoring natural disasters. EOS-05 is expected to assist in tracking rapidly developing events such as floods, cyclones, and forest fires, thereby improving disaster response efforts. Additionally, it will support agricultural monitoring and natural resource management, which are critical for India's economy.
At a weight of 2,367 kg, EOS-05 is the heaviest satellite ever launched by the GSLV. The mission marks the 19th flight of the GSLV and is ISRO's first successful orbital launch of the year, following a setback earlier in January when the PSLV-C62 mission failed due to an anomaly in the rocket's third stage. An earlier attempt to deploy a geosynchronous Earth-imaging satellite in 2021 also ended in failure due to issues with the GSLV's cryogenic upper stage.
The successful launch of EOS-05 represents a significant milestone for India's space capabilities, reinforcing the country's commitment to advancing its technological prowess in satellite imaging and monitoring.
