**India to Supply Electricity to Nepal Following Devastating Floods**
India has announced its decision to expedite the export of electricity to Nepal in response to significant power shortages caused by extensive damage to the country's hydropower infrastructure following catastrophic floods last month. The Indian Ministry of Power confirmed that it will supply up to 654 megawatts of electricity for 18 hours each day until December 31, 2026.
The floods, which struck on August 26, were triggered by a glacial mountain collapse along the China-Nepal border, leading to widespread destruction and loss of life. Reports indicate that over 1,400 individuals have died as a result of the flooding in both Nepal and Tibet, with at least 5,500 people still reported missing. The disaster has severely impacted at least 12 hydropower projects in Nepal, with around 900 power station workers among the missing.
Prior to the floods, Nepal relied almost entirely on hydropower to meet its energy needs, often exporting surplus electricity to India. In the aftermath of the floods, thousands of displaced individuals are currently residing in aid centers, facing uncertain futures as they await the possibility of returning to their homes. The United Nations and its partners have launched an appeal for nearly $50 million to support survivors of the disaster.
Nepali officials have estimated that at least $5 billion will be required for initial rebuilding efforts. They have also highlighted the broader implications of the disaster, pointing to the impact of climate change on vulnerable nations like Nepal, which contribute minimally to global emissions yet bear the brunt of environmental changes.
