**Indian IT Firm to Build $7.4 Billion Data Center Campus for AI Training**
Indian IT services giant Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has announced plans to construct a substantial data center campus in Hyderabad, with an estimated investment of $7.4 billion. This ambitious project aims to capitalize on the surging global demand for artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities and represents a strategic shift away from TCS's traditional outsourcing model.
The proposed facility will have a capacity of 1 gigawatt (GW) and is designed to support AI companies and large cloud service providers, commonly referred to as hyperscalers. TCS's dedicated unit, HyperVault, will oversee the development of the campus, which is anticipated to be one of the largest of its kind in India. The construction will be carried out in phases, with the timeline dictated by customer demand and evolving technology requirements.
K. Krithivasan, the CEO of TCS, emphasized that this initiative is part of the company's broader “infrastructure-to-intelligence” strategy. The move is indicative of a growing trend where the demand for AI is increasingly linked to infrastructure needs. Sohom Banerjee, a technology analyst at CUTS International, highlighted that TCS's decision reflects a broader shift within the IT sector, where companies are moving vertically down the AI stack to meet new market demands.
The investment in the data center comes at a time when AI is transforming the landscape of India's IT and business process management industry, which is currently valued at over $300 billion. TCS recently reported approximately $30 billion in revenue for the financial year ending in March and has also secured a significant $1.5 billion deal with German luxury car manufacturer Porsche, aimed at facilitating AI-driven advancements in the automotive sector.
As AI continues to reshape the traditional billing hours-based model of IT services, it is simultaneously generating demand for new services related to data centers, computational capacity, cloud platforms, AI models, and enterprise applications. Banerjee noted that these large-scale investments in AI data centers are pivotal in transitioning India from being primarily a user and integrator of AI to becoming a key player in AI computing.
The demand for data center capacity in India is already on the rise. According to property consultancy JLL, the country’s data center capacity is projected to expand from approximately 1.6 GW in mid-2026 to 6 GW by 2029. Hyderabad is emerging as a significant hub for such large-scale investments, driven by its growing reputation as a center for technology and innovation.
Local officials have indicated that the TCS data center project could create up to 7,000 direct and indirect jobs in various sectors, including technology, construction, engineering, and operations. This job creation is expected to provide a significant boost to the local economy and contribute to the overall growth of the IT sector in India.
