**Industry, Pharma, and AI: Moscow Announces New Opportunities for Indian Exports**
In a significant development for international trade relations, Russia has highlighted expanding opportunities for Indian exports, particularly in the sectors of industrial products, pharmaceuticals, and information technology. This announcement was made by Maxim Reshetnikov, the Russian Minister of Economic Development, during a visit to New Delhi as part of a delegation accompanying President Vladimir Putin for discussions ahead of the BRICS summit.
Reshetnikov emphasized the rapid growth in the range and volume of goods exported from India to Russia, noting that the trade relationship is evolving to include a wider variety of products. “Over the past five years, our trade volume has increased sevenfold, reaching 79 billion US dollars last year,” he stated. This growth indicates a significant potential for further expansion, particularly as the nature of trade becomes more diversified.
The minister acknowledged that while a substantial portion of resources is currently exported from Russia to India, Indian exports are increasingly gaining traction in the Russian market. He pointed out that India is emerging as a producer of various engineering goods, which are now entering Russia, reflecting the progress of Indian industry and its growing export capabilities.
A key area of focus for future cooperation is technology, specifically software development and AI-based solutions. Reshetnikov described this technological collaboration as a “breakthrough” that could pave the way for substantial investment and partnership opportunities between the two nations.
In addition to these developments, Reshetnikov mentioned ongoing negotiations for a free trade agreement between India and the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), which includes Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Armenia. He believes that such an agreement would further enhance trade diversification and strengthen economic ties.
To bolster trade and business interactions, the minister also highlighted the importance of improving tourism and simplifying visa regulations. He noted that while Russia has proposed a streamlined visa process for Indian tourists, India has taken steps in a different direction by introducing visa-free entry for certain categories of travelers. Reshetnikov indicated that discussions are ongoing regarding the potential reduction or waiver of visa fees for Indian visitors.
Furthermore, he stressed the necessity of enhancing connectivity between the two countries, suggesting an increase in the number of flights from the current 15 per week to a significantly higher figure, similar to the arrangements Russia has with other countries like the UAE and China. “We are very actively encouraging Indian airlines to come and start flying to Russia. There will be no problems with permits,” he assured.
As both nations look to strengthen their economic partnership, the emphasis on diversification and cooperation across various sectors may lead to a more balanced and mutually beneficial trade relationship. The developments outlined by Reshetnikov reflect a commitment to fostering closer ties between India and Russia, particularly in light of the upcoming BRICS summit, where further discussions on collaboration are expected to take place.
