**Inland Heat to Reach 37°C Ahead of Isolated Afternoon Thunderstorms**
The Department of Meteorology has issued a weather forecast indicating that inland temperatures in Cyprus are set to soar to 37°C on Monday, June 22, 2026. This heatwave will be accompanied by the possibility of isolated showers and thunderstorms, particularly in mountainous and inland areas during the afternoon.
The day is expected to start with clear skies, but conditions will change as clouds begin to build up after midday. This shift in weather is likely to lead to localized rain and thunderstorms, particularly in the interior and mountainous regions of the island. Winds will initially blow from the southeast to southwest at a light force of three Beaufort, but will gradually shift to a southwest-to-northwest direction with a light-to-moderate force of three to four Beaufort. Coastal areas may experience stronger gusts, reaching up to force five Beaufort.
Temperature variations across the island will be notable. While inland areas will experience peak temperatures of 37°C, the western coastal regions are expected to reach around 30°C. Other shorelines will see temperatures of approximately 32°C, and the higher mountain regions will remain cooler at around 26°C.
As the day progresses into the evening, the weather is predicted to clear up, with predominantly clear skies expected by nightfall. Overnight winds will shift to a northwest-to-northeast direction at a light force of three Beaufort, although western coastal areas may experience slightly stronger winds at a force of three to four Beaufort. The sea conditions are expected to remain smooth to slight throughout the day and into the night.
Looking ahead, the unsettled weather pattern is anticipated to continue into Tuesday, with another day of early clear conditions followed by afternoon cloud cover and a renewed risk of isolated rain or thunderstorms in the mountains and interior. However, a more stable weather pattern is predicted to return by Wednesday and Thursday, bringing predominantly clear skies and a gradual increase in temperatures, which are expected to rise above the seasonal average.
Residents and visitors are encouraged to stay hydrated and take precautions against the heat, especially during the peak temperature hours. As the summer season progresses, the return of urban rooftops, beachside restaurants, and open-air bars is anticipated, providing opportunities for outdoor activities despite the fluctuating weather conditions.
For those planning outdoor activities, it is advisable to keep an eye on the weather updates and be prepared for sudden changes in conditions, particularly in the afternoon when thunderstorms may develop.
