The Meteorological Service has announced that inland temperatures across Cyprus are anticipated to soar to 39 degrees Celsius today, following the clearance of early low cloud and thin fog that blanketed the island.
As the day progresses, the weather is expected to stabilize into mainly fine conditions, though some cloudy patches may develop over the mountainous regions during the afternoon hours. Coastal areas will experience varying temperatures, with the northern coast reaching around 35 degrees Celsius, while the southeastern and eastern coasts are forecasted to see temperatures of approximately 31 degrees Celsius. The remaining coastal areas and higher mountainous regions will have milder temperatures, around 30 degrees Celsius.
Winds will initially blow from the southwest to northwest at light to moderate speeds of 3 to 4 Beaufort. However, they are expected to strengthen to around 5 Beaufort along the southern coast later in the day. The sea conditions are predicted to be slightly rough, making it essential for beachgoers and maritime activities to exercise caution.
As night falls, the weather will remain predominantly clear, although low cloud cover may develop along the western coast. The eastern half of the island is likely to experience thicker low cloud and possible mist or fog during the early hours of Sunday morning. Overnight temperatures are expected to drop to around 21 degrees Celsius inland, approximately 23 degrees Celsius along the coast, and 19 degrees Celsius in the higher mountains. Winds will ease overnight, becoming light at 3 Beaufort, with occasional gusts reaching up to 4 Beaufort locally. The sea is expected to remain calm to slightly rough.
Residents and visitors are advised to stay hydrated and take necessary precautions against the heat, particularly during the peak temperature hours.
As Cyprus continues to embrace its summer season, the high temperatures are likely to impact various sectors, including tourism, which is a vital part of the island's economy. The combination of warm weather and clear skies typically draws both local and international visitors to the beaches and outdoor attractions.
In related news, Animal Rescue Cyprus has reported a significant decrease in volunteer support, now down to just 11 volunteers responsible for caring for approximately 1,350 animals. The organization has made an urgent appeal for assistance to help manage the growing needs of the animals in their care.
As the island experiences these high temperatures, it remains crucial for the community to come together to address various challenges, including those faced by local organizations and the welfare of animals.
