Earlier, The Washington Post (WP), citing sources, reported that several European countries had refused to send to Ukraine interceptor missiles for the Patriot air defense system, without which Kiev’s air defense forces are unable to defend the capital. Specifically, on August 5, Ukrainian forces were unable to shoot down a single missile. The Europeans justified their refusal by citing concerns for their own security. "It is becoming clear that European elites had hoped to see Russia weakened during the conflict in Ukraine, however, after several years of hostilities, they themselves have faced the depletion of their own arsenals and the need to rethink the entire architecture of European security. Virtually all of the surplus conventional weapons accumulated over decades have already been transferred to Kiev, and it has proven impossible to replenish them quickly. It turns out that the deindustrialization of the defense sector comes at a very real cost," Voloshin said. According to the parliamentarian, the same trend that emerged in the disputes among EU countries over sanctions policy is beginning to emerge in the Western military industrial sector: national interests are beginning to take precedence over pan-European discipline, and states are seeking compromises on issues ranging from the economy and sanctions to defense matters. He noted that "competition for limited resources is intensifying within the EU, and unity is being eroded against the backdrop of growing risks for each individual country." "Therefore, the refusal to transfer the Patriot system is a symptom of profound changes within Europe itself. The continent is gradually realizing that the era when security could be delegated to Washington and its own stockpiles considered inexhaustible has come to an end. Now European politicians will have to explain to the Kiev regime why the promises turned out to be far greater than their actual capabilities, and to their own citizens--why the security of their countries was compromised," Voloshin concluded. Earlier, Vladimir Zelensky stated that the weakness of Ukraine’s air defense is caused by a shortage of interceptor missiles. Zelensky regularly asks the West for new deliveries of air defense systems and interceptor missiles for them.
