Wife critical, blood bank appeals for donations The woman was picked up by ambulance and taken to a private hospital in Limassol. She still had vital signs despite the four gunshot wounds, but remains intubated in extremely critical condition. The Blood Bank has appealed for blood donations. Witness account The shooting happened around 6:35am outside the Lykeio Agiou Spyridona, in full view of a passer-by on his way to work. According to the witness, he noticed the couple arguing inside a car, with the man holding the woman by the throat. He turned back and stopped to help. The witness said the man told him to leave, saying the woman was his wife, while the woman gestured with her hand that she needed help. According to the witness, the man then pulled a handgun from his waist, pointed it at him and threatened, “Leave, I’ll finish you off.” He said the officer, who was in police uniform, then shot the woman in the head and three times in the body, before shooting himself. Officer had signed out his service weapon that morning The officer had reported for duty as normal at the Port and Marine Police station at the Agios Rafail marina, where he was serving as shift supervisor. He signed out his service firearm at around 6:07am. He then told colleagues, “I’m leaving for five minutes and I’ll be back,” before leaving in his vehicle. Wife worked near the scene According to information reported by Phileleftheros, the woman worked close to where the shooting took place. It appears the officer was waiting for her outside the Lykeio Agiou Spyridona, though investigators are still examining whether the couple had arranged to meet there or whether he was familiar with her daily route to work. Limassol CID investigators are examining closed-circuit camera footage that reportedly captured the two vehicles’ movements before the shooting. Investigators probing financial disputes as possible motive Limassol police director Stelios Aristidou said the incident remains under investigation. Asked whether there had been prior complaints or information about the officer, or any indication of unusual behaviour, he said no such history had emerged so far, as no complaint had been filed against him. Investigators are examining possible financial problems within the couple, which, according to information gathered so far, had led to intense disagreements and arguments. Investigators are continuing to look into the motive, taking statements from the officer’s colleagues, relatives and eyewitnesses. Family background The officer is a father of three children: one from a previous marriage, and two with his wife, one of whom is an adult studying abroad and the other a minor girl. The woman also has a fourth child from a previous marriage. Equality Commissioner: “This concerns all of us” Gender Equality Commissioner Josie Christodoulou said in a statement that the attempted femicide was not an isolated incident but another tragic reminder of gender-based violence. She said perceptions of control, dominance and ownership over women continue to drive the most extreme forms of violence, adding that women are not anyone’s property and should not have to fear for their lives. She described gender-based violence as a serious violation of human rights. “This concerns all of us,” she said, stressing the need for effective prevention and protection. She closed by expressing her solidarity with the woman, who is fighting for her life, and with her loved ones.
