**Ioannou Hails EU Presidency Achievements**
Cyprus’ recent six-month presidency of the Council of the European Union has been marked by notable advancements in housing policy and civil protection legislation, according to Interior Minister Constantinos Ioannou. In a statement made on Thursday, Ioannou highlighted the significant contributions made by Cyprus in shaping EU policies during this period.
One of the central priorities of Cyprus’ presidency was addressing the pressing issue of affordable housing within the EU. Ioannou emphasized that access to affordable, decent, and sustainable housing has emerged as one of the most critical social, economic, and demographic challenges facing the European Union today. He stated, “The presidency worked consistently to ensure that access to affordable, decent and sustainable housing became a key element of the European social and political agenda.”
Key initiatives during Cyprus' presidency included the organization of the first informal videoconference of EU housing ministers in February, discussions among ministers during the Employment, Social Policy, Health and Consumer Affairs (EPSCO) Council in March, and an informal ministerial meeting held in Nicosia in May. These events focused on exploring innovative solutions, simplifying procedures, and increasing investments to boost the supply of affordable housing across member states.
Ioannou marked the adoption of the Council conclusions titled "Housing: Demographic Change and Policy Design" as a significant achievement of the presidency. This document represents the first collective acknowledgment by EU member states of the necessity for a coordinated approach to housing policy while respecting national competencies. The conclusions also draw attention to the interconnectedness of housing with demographic changes, labor market needs, social inclusion, and overall competitiveness within Europe.
The conclusions specifically call for enhanced support for various demographic groups, including young people, families, students, older individuals, and middle-income households. Ioannou noted that there is a growing recognition that the housing crisis is affecting a broader segment of society than previously understood. In addition to housing policy, Ioannou reported that Cyprus made substantial progress in the area of civil protection. The presidency advanced negotiations on a new regulation governing the EU Civil Protection Mechanism, which aims to strengthen the bloc’s preparedness and emergency response framework. He highlighted the importance of consensus-building and close cooperation with member states and EU institutions in laying the groundwork for future presidencies to continue developing policies in both housing and civil protection.
