**IPL’s Business Value Rockets to $20 Billion as Indian Cricket League Soars**
The Indian Premier League (IPL), recognized as the world’s richest Twenty20 cricket series, has seen its business value surge to approximately $20.6 billion, marking an increase of over 11 percent this year. This significant growth, reported by the United States-based investment bank Houlihan Lokey, reflects a trend of double-digit growth for the second consecutive year, as detailed in their "2026 IPL Brand Valuation Study" released on July 29, 2026.
Since its inception in 2008, the IPL has attracted top international cricketers and established a robust commercial model that integrates various revenue streams, including broadcasting rights, sponsorship deals, merchandise sales, and franchise investments. The league currently features ten teams, each contributing to the overall financial success of the tournament.
Recent ownership changes within the league's franchises underscore the IPL's appeal to major investors. In March 2026, a consortium consisting of Blackstone, Bolt Ventures, Aditya Birla Group, and Times of India Group made headlines by acquiring the Royal Challengers Bengaluru franchise for a record $1.78 billion. This was followed by the announcement in May that the Mittal family and Adar Poonawalla would purchase the Rajasthan Royals franchise for $1.65 billion. These transactions highlight the increasing valuations of franchises and the growing interest from private capital in the league.
Harsh Talikoti, a director at Houlihan Lokey, commented on the IPL's unique position within the sports industry, stating, “Franchise valuations have reached new highs, private capital participation has accelerated, and the league’s commercial ecosystem continues to diversify.” He emphasized that the IPL represents a convergence of sports, media, and consumer opportunities, supported by strong revenue visibility and a disciplined cost structure. The expanding global audience further enhances the league's attractiveness to investors.
In addition to the overall business value, the IPL’s stand-alone brand value has also seen a notable rise, increasing by 10.3 percent over the past year to reach $4.3 billion. The Royal Challengers Bengaluru, the reigning champions, maintain their status as the league’s most valuable franchise, boasting a brand value of $312 million.
As the IPL continues to grow in both popularity and financial strength, it solidifies its position as a premier sporting event on the global stage, attracting attention from fans and investors alike. The league's ability to innovate and adapt to market demands will likely play a crucial role in its future success.
