**Iran Destroys US Saildrone in Strait of Hormuz**
Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has announced the destruction of a US Saildrone Explorer reconnaissance vessel at the entrance to the Strait of Hormuz. The IRGC released footage showing the unmanned craft engulfed in flames on the water. The incident occurred on Thursday, with the vessel identified by its hull number 5838.
According to the IRGC Navy, the Saildrone was operating in proximity to the strategic waterway when it was struck. Iranian state media characterized the vessel as an American surveillance drone, although the US military has not yet confirmed the loss of the craft.
In its statement, the IRGC accused the US military of deploying unmanned vessels to the Strait of Hormuz out of fear of confrontation with Iranian forces. The IRGC emphasized that the Strait remains under Tehran's control and that any hostile presence in the area would be targeted.
The Saildrone Explorer is approximately seven meters long and is equipped with various cameras, sensors, and communications systems designed for maritime surveillance and reconnaissance. The US Navy has previously utilized this type of unmanned vessel as part of its operations with the Bahrain-based 5th Fleet's Task Force 59, which focuses on integrating unmanned systems and artificial intelligence into regional military activities.
This incident follows closely on the heels of another event where the IRGC captured a US underwater drone at the entrance to the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian media released footage of what appeared to be an Anduril-built Dive-LD autonomous underwater vehicle, which the Pentagon acknowledged losing. However, the US military stated that the drone was old and non-functional, carrying no sensitive data or classified equipment.
The destruction of the Saildrone and the capture of the underwater drone highlight the escalating tensions in the region between the US and Iran. The maritime standoff has intensified in recent weeks, with the US accusing the IRGC of targeting American warships and destroying several Iranian oil tankers. In response, Iran has conducted attacks on US vessels and commercial tankers that it claims have violated restrictions in the Strait of Hormuz.
