**Iran Vows 'Devastating' Response to U.S. Sanctions Threats**
Iran has issued a stern warning in response to the United States' recent threats of imposing unprecedented economic sanctions aimed at destabilizing the Iranian leadership. On Friday, Iranian officials stated that any new U.S. actions would be met with a "devastating" response.
U.S. Treasury chief Scott Bessent indicated on Thursday that the U.S. is preparing to implement the toughest financial penalties in history against Iran. This announcement followed a warning from President Donald Trump, who cautioned that any country offering support to Iran would face economic repercussions. Bessent is expected to provide further details on the sanctions during a press conference scheduled for Monday.
Major General Ali Abdollahi, the chief of staff of Iran’s Armed Forces, emphasized that Iran's military response would be comprehensive and decisive. He stated, "With preparedness across land, sea, air, air defense, and cyberspace, Iran’s armed forces will respond to the enemy’s new threats with crushing, punishing, and devastating responses," as reported by Iranian media.
In addition to military officials, Iran's parliament speaker, Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, who also serves as the main negotiator in talks with the U.S., expressed concerns over the effectiveness of U.S. military strategies. During a visit to Iraq, he suggested that the U.S. has recognized its inability to achieve victory through direct military confrontation and called for strategic planning to counteract the sanctions. He accused the U.S. and Israel of engaging in economic and "cognitive" warfare against Iran.
The potential sanctions have also impacted global oil markets. Oil prices have remained stable but are on track for a second consecutive weekly increase due to concerns over energy exports from the Gulf region. Following Bessent's remarks, oil prices reached a three-week high, driven by fears that the sanctions could disrupt oil supply chains. Bessent reassured that the sanctions are designed to exert maximum economic pressure without leading to a significant military escalation.
The ongoing conflict in the region has already resulted in thousands of casualties, with Gulf nations involved and markets reacting to Iran's demonstrated capability to influence shipping through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. This waterway is crucial, accounting for approximately one-fifth of all traded oil globally.
Despite previous ceasefire agreements announced in April and June, efforts to restore normal shipping operations have faltered, leading to continued tensions and instability in the area. Iran has endured a series of economic sanctions for nearly five decades, dating back to the Islamic Revolution of 1979, and has characterized the U.S. sanctions as "economic terrorism." The Iranian foreign ministry asserted that such measures would not deter the nation's resolve to protect its independence, dignity, and sovereignty.
As the U.S. prepares to unveil its latest sanctions package, the geopolitical landscape remains fraught with uncertainty. The Trump administration faces domestic pressures, particularly with rising fuel prices impacting approval ratings ahead of the upcoming midterm elections in November. The administration's strategy appears to hinge on a dual approach: enforcing a blockade on Iran while simultaneously implementing stringent sanctions to destabilize the current regime.
As both nations brace for potential escalations, the international community watches closely, aware that the ramifications of these developments could extend far beyond their borders.
