**Israeli Forces Demolish Palestinian Village in West Bank**
Israeli forces have carried out extensive demolitions in the Palestinian village of Khirbet al-Tabban, located in the Masafer Yatta area of the South Hebron Hills, leaving dozens of residents without shelter. Local council head Nidal Younis described the event as an "erasure of this village from existence," highlighting the severity of the demolitions that affected 12 families and rendered nearly all of the approximately 70 residents homeless. Among those affected, resident Suad Mohammad Obeid recounted her family's desperate attempts to salvage their belongings during the demolition. Despite their efforts, much of what they managed to move was destroyed in the process. Obeid's family includes seven young children, adding to the urgency and emotional toll of the situation.
The area of Masafer Yatta has been designated by Israeli authorities as a military training zone since the 1980s. This designation has been a point of contention, as many Palestinian residents argue that it is used as a means to pressure them into leaving their ancestral lands. In 2022, Israel’s High Court rejected petitions from local Palestinians seeking to remain on the land, intensifying fears of displacement among the community.
Younis criticized the Israeli military's claims of conducting genuine exercises in the area, suggesting that such activities are infrequent and that the military designation serves primarily to facilitate the removal of residents.
The demolitions in Khirbet al-Tabban are part of a broader trend of increasing violence and displacement in the West Bank, which the United Nations reports has reached unprecedented levels since the onset of the Gaza war in October 2023. The situation has raised concerns among human rights organizations and international observers regarding the treatment of Palestinian communities.
Despite the destruction, residents of Khirbet al-Tabban have expressed their determination to rebuild their homes and community, although they remain apprehensive about the possibility of further demolitions by Israeli forces in the future.
