**Jellyfish Force Partial Shutdown of French Nuclear Plant**
A significant influx of jellyfish has prompted a partial shutdown of the Gravelines nuclear power station in northern France. Électricité de France (EDF), the operator of the facility, announced that two of its six reactors were taken offline on Wednesday and Thursday due to jellyfish clogging the seawater filtration system, which is essential for cooling the reactors.
Gravelines, located between Dunkirk and Calais in the Hauts-de-France region, is one of France's largest nuclear power stations. The facility's cooling system draws water from a canal connected to the North Sea, and the presence of jellyfish poses a risk to its operations. This is not the first time the plant has faced such a challenge; a similar situation occurred last August when jellyfish also disrupted operations.
Currently, units three, four, and six are shut down. Unit three had only recently been reconnected to the grid on August 18 after being offline due to an earlier jellyfish influx. Meanwhile, units one and two are operating at reduced power levels as a precautionary measure.
Each of Gravelines' six units is capable of producing 900 megawatts of electricity. The jellyfish issue has raised concerns about the reliability of the plant, especially during the summer months when jellyfish populations tend to increase. Experts note that warmer weather leads to higher levels of plankton, which in turn attracts jellyfish to the surface.
To combat this recurring problem, EDF has implemented measures aimed at preventing jellyfish from infiltrating the cooling system. One such initiative involves collaborating with local fishermen to capture and relocate jellyfish further offshore, minimizing their impact on the plant's operations.
Similar incidents have been reported at other nuclear facilities, including the Torness plant in Scotland in 2011 and Sweden's Oskarshamn plant in 2013, although such occurrences remain relatively uncommon.
As the situation develops, EDF continues to monitor the conditions at Gravelines and is working to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the nuclear power station.
