**JRCC Informed by Turkish Cypriots That Assistance Not Required Following Ferry Accident**
Larnaca, Cyprus – The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) in Larnaca announced on Sunday evening that it had been informed by Turkish Cypriot authorities that they did not require the assistance that had been offered following the sinking of a passenger ferry off the coast of Kyrenia earlier that day.
The ferry, which had departed from the new port of Kyrenia at approximately 12:10 PM, was en route to the Turkish port of Tasucu when it capsized. As of the latest reports, eight individuals have been confirmed dead, while 17 others remain unaccounted for.
In response to the incident, the JRCC initially expressed its readiness to assist in the search-and-rescue operations that were launched in the northern part of Cyprus. The centre reached out to the United Nations peacekeeping force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) to facilitate communication with the Turkish Cypriot side, emphasizing the Republic of Cyprus's preparedness to provide help if needed.
Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides also took action by instructing his chief negotiator, Menelaos Menelaou, to initiate communication with Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman. The aim was to clarify the Republic of Cyprus's willingness to offer all possible assistance in the wake of the tragic incident. A government official reiterated the commitment to assist, stating, "When human lives are in danger, we contribute with every available means. The Republic of Cyprus has the means, the operational capability, and, above all, the readiness to assist immediately."
However, the offer for assistance was declined by Turkish Cypriot authorities. Unal Ustel, the Turkish Cypriot 'prime minister,' reported that as of 7 PM, the search efforts were being conducted with significant resources, including two aircraft, four helicopters, four unmanned drones, and four coastguard boats actively involved in the operation. Ustel also indicated that a Turkish navy search and rescue vessel, capable of operating at depths of up to 1,000 meters, was expected to arrive later in the evening. This vessel would enhance the search capabilities, particularly as the ferry was reported to have sunk to a depth of 514 meters.
The tragic incident has raised concerns and highlighted the importance of effective communication and cooperation in emergency situations, especially in the context of the divided island. The JRCC's readiness to assist underscores the commitment of the Republic of Cyprus to respond to humanitarian crises, regardless of political divisions.
