**Justice Minister Meets with Council of Europe Development Bank to Discuss New Prisons**
On Wednesday, Cyprus' Justice Minister Costas Fitiris held a significant meeting with a delegation from the Council of Europe Development Bank (CEB) to discuss the construction of new prison facilities in the country. Fitiris emphasized the strategic importance of this project, linking it to the modernization of the correctional infrastructure, improved detention conditions, enhanced security, and the overall effective operation of the prison system.
The meeting included key figures such as Sylvie Anagnostopoulos, the CEB's country manager for Greece and Cyprus, Jerome Costanzo, a technical advisor at the bank, and George Panteli, the ministry’s permanent secretary. Additionally, officials involved in the relevant studies and coordination of the new prison project were present.
During the discussions, the group focused on the current conditions at the Central Prisons, the needs of the correctional system, and the next steps necessary to advance the project. A significant portion of the conversation centered on the initial feasibility study, which aims to define technical and operational requirements for the new facilities. The process of securing specialized technical and advisory support was also highlighted as a critical element in moving forward.
The CEB is expected to play a pivotal role in the project’s technical preparation, offering guidance and expertise based on its extensive experience with similar infrastructure developments across Europe. Despite ongoing measures aimed at reducing overcrowding and expanding alternative sentencing options, the existing infrastructure is deemed inadequate for contemporary correctional needs.
The Justice Ministry has committed to continuing its efforts in collaboration with state authorities and specialized bodies to ensure the successful development and implementation of the new prison project.
