Larnaca is making significant progress on its anti-flood works in the Kamares area, with the local district self-government organization (EOA) announcing on Thursday that the project is now ahead of schedule. Originally set to be completed by July 2027, the new timeline indicates that the project may finish even sooner.
The primary objective of the Kamares project is to mitigate flood risks in residential zones within the Larnaca and Aradippou municipalities. This initiative was prompted by the severe flooding that occurred on December 13, 2014, which caused extensive damage to buildings and infrastructure in the Kamares area. The flooding was a result of heavy rainfall that overwhelmed the river Tremythos, leading to water inundating nearby streets and homes, and even sweeping away vehicles, some with occupants trapped inside. Emergency responders reported that approximately 20 individuals, including children, were rescued from vehicles caught in the floodwaters.
The EOA noted that the anti-flood project was initially slated for implementation in 2015 but faced delays for several years. In 2023, the responsibility for the project was transferred to the Larnaca sewerage board as part of broader local administration reforms. Since taking over, the EOA has focused on key aspects of the project, including the removal of an embankment and pedestrian walkway upstream of the Kamares monument. Additionally, a pedestrian bridge on stilts is being constructed to facilitate unobstructed river flow, thereby enhancing flood protection in the area.
Looking ahead, the EOA is planning the next phase of the project, which aims to expand anti-flood infrastructure to safeguard the developing residential area of Vergina. This expansion is seen as vital for enhancing public safety, protecting properties, and establishing robust infrastructure that meets the needs of Larnaca's growing population.
