**Kenya to Host 2029 World Athletics Championships, Marking Historic First for Africa**
Kenya has been awarded the prestigious 2029 World Athletics Championships, making it the first African nation to host this flagship global event. The announcement was made by World Athletics on Tuesday, revealing that Nairobi triumphed over competing bids from major European cities including London, Rome, and Munich. Munich will instead host the championships in 2031, while Beijing is set to welcome the event in 2027.
World Athletics President Sebastian Coe expressed his enthusiasm for the decision, stating, “Taking our championships to Africa for the first time will be historic.” He praised Nairobi's bid as “compelling and emotional,” highlighting Kenya’s significant contributions to international athletics.
Kenyan President William Ruto celebrated the announcement as a monumental achievement for the continent. He remarked, “This is Kenya’s moment, Africa’s moment, and a victory for generations of athletes who made our nation synonymous with excellence on the track, on the road and cross-country.” Ruto assured that Kenya would deliver “an unforgettable championship worthy of our athletes, our country and our continent.”
The 2029 championships will be the first senior World Athletics Championships held in Kenya and the first ever in Africa. Although Kenya has previously hosted various international athletics events, such as the 2007 World Cross Country Championships in Mombasa and the World Under-18 and Under-20 Championships in Nairobi in 2017 and 2021, respectively, this event marks a significant milestone in the country's sporting history.
Kenya has produced numerous world-renowned athletes, including Olympic champions Eliud Kipchoge, Faith Kipyegon, David Rudisha, and Kipchoge Keino, further solidifying its reputation as a powerhouse in long-distance running.
The successful bid for the 2029 championships comes after Kenya's previous attempt to host the 2025 event, which was awarded to Tokyo. Coe noted that Nairobi returned with a stronger proposal this time, bolstered by ongoing renovations at the Kasarani Stadium. This venue is also being prepared for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, which Kenya will co-host with Tanzania and Uganda.
Despite the excitement surrounding the upcoming championships, Kenyan athletics has faced scrutiny regarding doping issues. The Athletics Integrity Unit has classified Kenya among the national federations at the highest risk of doping, leading to stricter testing requirements for its athletes.
The decision to host the World Athletics Championships in Kenya adds to a growing list of major international sporting events in Africa. Morocco is set to become the second African nation to host matches in a men’s FIFA World Cup when it co-hosts the 2030 tournament alongside Spain and Portugal. South Africa was the first to achieve this feat in 2010. Furthermore, Moroccan officials are vying to host the 2030 final at the planned 115,000-seat Hassan II Stadium near Casablanca, pending FIFA's decision on the venue.
In another significant development for African sports, Senegal will host the Youth Olympic Games from October 31 to November 13, 2026. The Olympic flame was formally received by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye in Dakar on September 12, marking the first Olympic sporting competition to take place on the continent.
