**Kenya’s Kibiwott Kandie Receives Seven-Year Ban for Doping Violations**
Kenyan long-distance runner Kibiwott Kandie has been handed a seven-year ban by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) due to multiple anti-doping violations. The AIU announced the decision on June 25, 2026, following Kandie's provisional suspension that began in March 2025.
Kandie, who is 30 years old and a former half-marathon world record holder, was initially suspended after he refused to provide a sample during an out-of-competition doping test. This incident occurred on March 1, 2025, at his residence in Kenya. Kandie cited an urgent financial matter as the reason for his refusal, despite being warned about the potential consequences of such an action.
The AIU's investigation revealed that Kandie’s refusal was part of a broader attempt to manipulate the doping control process. An analysis of his phone and financial records uncovered a series of transactions and communications with a nurse, including 11 payments made in the year leading up to the incident. These findings were corroborated by the Anti-Doping Agency of Kenya, which confirmed that Kandie had submitted falsified documents regarding his refusal to take the test.
In addition to the refusal to provide a sample, Kandie was charged with tampering or attempting to tamper with the doping control process. Originally facing an eight-year ban for both violations, the AIU reduced his sentence by one year after he accepted the sanctions early. His ban is retroactively effective from March 14, 2025, and will extend until March 13, 2032, when he will be 36 years old.
Brett Clothier, head of the AIU, emphasized the importance of maintaining the integrity of athletics, stating, “This case serves as a reminder that no athlete is above the rules in the sport of athletics. If an athlete refuses a test, it places the integrity of the sport at risk.” He further noted that the AIU possesses strong forensic capabilities to investigate such cases thoroughly.
Kandie gained recognition as a prominent athlete in the long-distance running community, particularly for his achievements in the half marathon. He is a three-time champion of the Valencia Half Marathon and set a world record time of 57:32 in 2020. He remains one of the fastest runners in history over the half marathon distance, holding two of the six quickest performances ever recorded.
The ban marks a significant setback for Kandie, who was considered one of the leading figures in Kenyan athletics. His case highlights ongoing concerns regarding doping in sports, particularly in countries renowned for their long-distance runners. The AIU continues to monitor and enforce anti-doping regulations to uphold fair competition in athletics.
