The project is sited on a 62,335 sq m plot zoned for economic activities (Βα4-ΒΕ), with the facilities themselves covering around 44,000 sq m. A strip of green space borders the plot’s eastern side, next to the road leading to Limassol Port. The nearest residence is roughly 70 metres away. The two nearest buildings with sensitive uses are the 16th Primary School in Zakaki, 560 metres southeast of the plot’s southeastern boundary, and Agia Varvara Gymnasium, 645 metres northeast of its northeastern boundary. Environmental review The Environmental Authority’s Reasoned Determination, issued on August 27 under Article 24 of the environmental impact assessment laws, found that the project’s expected impacts are environmentally insignificant and fully manageable through the proposed mitigation measures, meaning a full assessment study will not be required. Construction is expected to take around 24 months from the start of earthworks and building works. Production capacity The plant’s estimated total production capacity is 4,975 tonnes, made up of 2,550 tonnes of juices in Tetra Pak cartons, 165 tonnes of canned juices, 250 tonnes of squashes and juices in PET bottles, 870 tonnes of bottled wines and spirits, and 1,140 tonnes of wines in bag-in-box and Tetra Pak packaging. The new facility will receive between 1,000 and 2,500 tonnes of wine from KEO’s winery in Mallia for processing, ageing and bottling. Zivania will be produced exclusively from wine and pomace sourced from Mallia, with no grapes received on site. The plant will also receive imported raw materials, including bulk molasses spirit, Eau de Vie, bulk wines and refined concentrated grape must, for use in wine and spirits production, and will include storage space for beer and imported products. The plant’s main activities will include preparing juices from concentrate for canning, blending and filtering wines and spirits, cold stabilisation to remove tartrates, pasteurisation where required, distillation of zivania and ouzo, and the ageing of wines, commandaria and Eau de Vie in barrels, alongside bottling and canning of finished products. Energy and waste management The project includes a 600 kW rooftop solar system, expected to cut indirect greenhouse gas emissions by 40 per cent. Vinasse and pomace will be sent to licensed units for energy recovery. Hazardous liquid waste from maintenance work and the laboratory will be collected separately, stored in closed containers, and sent to licensed waste management facilities. The plant will also include a secondary wastewater treatment station with a daily capacity of 50 cubic metres, treating wastewater from the cleaning of tanks, machinery, pipework and production floors, along with water from the regeneration of the facility’s deioniser. The treated wastewater will then be discharged into the Limassol DLGO’s sewerage network.
