The announcement followed his meeting on Thursday with the UK’s new Minister of State for Europe, Lord Wood, at the British Foreign Office. Speaking outside the Foreign Office, Kombos said the meeting confirmed both sides’ intention to move ahead with strengthening bilateral relations. This builds on groundwork laid during his previous visit to London in July. He said the strategic dialogue between the two countries had now been “decided and finalised”, with preparations for it also discussed at the meeting. Kombos focused in particular on issues concerning the British Bases in Cyprus. He said the meeting revisited matters raised in previous contacts between the two sides, alongside new elements raised for the first time. He said Nicosia is now seeking an “institutionalised, structured dialogue” aimed at resolving a series of problems linked to the British Bases. He added: “This was raised on our side, and we expect a date to be finalised for the start of exactly this kind of dialogue.” The meeting also focused on the latest developments in the Cyprus problem. Kombos briefed Lord Wood on Nicosia’s approach following the recent visit by the UN Secretary-General, as well as on the efforts of the Personal Envoy for the Cyprus problem. He repeated Nicosia’s desire to resume substantive negotiations as soon as possible, on the basis of the agreed framework. He also asked for the UK’s “active, steady assistance and support” for efforts on the Cyprus problem, stressing its permanent seat on the UN Security Council. The two sides agreed to stay in contact on the Cyprus problem, bilateral relations, and regional developments.
