A couple driving through the area spotted the two suspects lighting fireworks near the forest at around 7pm on Sunday, sparking the fire. According to their account, the couple got out of their car and confronted the pair, who then got into their own vehicle and fled. The couple put out the fire and photographed the suspects’ car, information that led police to the arrest of the two Brazilian nationals, who live and work in Limassol. According to philenews information, the two suspects claimed they had bought the fireworks from a kiosk in the area and lit them for fun. Police confirmed the first part of their account after locating the kiosk where the fireworks were purchased. As for motive, sources said all possibilities remain open at this stage, pending the completion of forensic examination of the suspects’ mobile phones. The pair face serious charges, including conspiracy to commit a felony, forest arson, attempted arson, negligent and reckless acts, and illegal possession and use of explosive substances. They appeared before Larnaca District Court yesterday, which ordered their remand in custody for eight days.
