**Kuwait Donates $50,000 to Cyprus Committee on Missing Persons**
The State of Kuwait has made a significant contribution of $50,000 (€43,319) to the Committee on Missing Persons (CMP) in Cyprus, as announced by the United Nations peacekeeping force in Cyprus (Unficyp) on Thursday. This recent donation marks a continued commitment from Kuwait, bringing its total contributions to the CMP to €243,750 since it began supporting the committee in 2014.
The CMP plays a crucial role in addressing the sensitive issue of individuals who went missing during the intercommunal conflicts in Cyprus. Established in 1981 and becoming operational in 2006, the CMP aims to locate and identify a total of 2,002 missing persons, providing closure to families who have endured decades of uncertainty regarding the fate of their loved ones.
Unficyp highlighted that the latest donation will assist the CMP in its ongoing efforts to identify and return the remains of missing individuals to their families by the year 2026. This timeline is significant for many relatives who have been waiting for answers for many years, as the CMP works diligently to resolve these long-standing cases.
As of the end of last month, the CMP has made notable progress in its mission. It has exhumed 1,719 bodies and successfully identified the remains of 1,081 individuals from the official list of missing persons. Additionally, 217 other individuals have been identified, bringing hope to numerous families. Among those identified, 317 were Turkish Cypriots and 764 were Greek Cypriots, reflecting the diverse backgrounds of the missing persons.
In the current year alone, the CMP has identified the remains of 18 individuals, all of whom are Turkish Cypriots. This ongoing work underscores the CMP's commitment to addressing the humanitarian aspects of the conflict and providing closure to affected families.
The CMP relies heavily on donations from nation-states and international organizations to fund its operations.
