**Lando Norris Calls for Stricter Penalties After Azerbaijan Grand Prix Incident**
Baku, Azerbaijan – Lando Norris, the McLaren driver and reigning world champion, expressed his frustration following an early exit from the Azerbaijan Grand Prix on Saturday. The race ended prematurely for Norris due to a collision that also involved Franco Colapinto of Alpine and Pierre Gasly, leading Norris to advocate for stricter penalties in Formula 1.
The incident occurred during a Safety Car restart on lap 36. Colapinto, who was attempting to gain positions, locked up as he approached Turn 1 and collided with both Norris and Gasly. The crash eliminated all three drivers from the race, leaving Norris particularly disappointed with the outcome.
In a post-race interview with Sky Sports, Norris reflected on his struggles throughout the race, stating, “I was just slow. Struggled a lot in this race. You saw how quickly everyone came past me.” Despite acknowledging his own earlier mistakes that had dropped him down the order, he emphasized that the crash was not his fault. “At the end of the day, I just got taken out. Just some drivers that shouldn’t be in Formula 1, to be honest,” he remarked.
Norris did not hold back in his criticism of Colapinto's actions, suggesting that the FIA should impose stricter sanctions for reckless driving. He stated, “If you cause a crash on a restart like this, you should have at least a one-race ban.” Norris called for the governing body to take a firmer stance on such incidents to ensure the safety and integrity of the sport.
Following the crash, Colapinto received a 10-second time penalty and a five-place grid penalty for the next race in Malaysia. In a statement after the incident, Colapinto took responsibility for his actions, expressing remorse to both Norris and Gasly. “Just sorry to all the team, not only to Pierre, it was a big mistake,” he said. He added, “Cold brakes, cold tires, I was completely out of control. Unfortunately, I also took Pierre out. And Lando, of course. Big sorry to both of them.”
The Azerbaijan Grand Prix concluded with George Russell of Mercedes securing his third victory of the season, narrowly fending off a late challenge from Red Bull's Max Verstappen. The race results and the incident involving Norris and Colapinto have sparked discussions about driver conduct and safety in Formula 1, with Norris's comments highlighting a growing concern among drivers regarding the standards expected on the track.
