The reopening followed an initiative by Justice and Public Order Minister Costas Fytiris. The arrivals area had remained closed since October 2023, after a decision to shut it for security reasons following the Hamas attack on Israel. Despite the hardship caused to thousands of drivers and the long queues that formed at the departures gate since then, a decision to reopen it had not been taken. The situation changed after a recent meeting convened by the Justice Minister to address congestion at Larnaca Airport. The road’s reopening was made possible through cooperation between police, the Department of Public Works and airport operator Hermes Airports. In a statement issued earlier today, police clarified that all private vehicles will be able to use the road to the arrivals area to pick up passengers. They made clear, however, that taxis will not be permitted to use it. “Taxi vehicles will serve passengers for pick-up exclusively from the designated areas set up west of the terminal buildings, near the bus waiting areas. Passengers being dropped off will be served by taxis via the road to the departures area,” police said in the statement. Police also called on drivers to comply with road signage and instructions from officers, to avoid unnecessary stopping or parking, and to use the designated parking areas to ensure the safe and smooth movement of passengers. “The cooperation of all drivers is essential for the safe movement of vehicles and the smooth operation of Larnaca Airport,” police said, adding that officers will be present in the area to manage traffic and assist the public, as well as to carry out traffic checks to ensure compliance with the new arrangements.
